The editors of Room One Thousand and GASU invite you to consider the relationship of the individual to the collective in the form of a modular seating system that will be installed on the CED courtyard. How are the ways we choose to cut something up informed by its material and formal properties? How do units interact and commingle in an aggregation and what are the scalar consequences?
The winning proposal will receive $2,000 Prize, a $1,000 material stipend and fabrication support from the CED shops to install their proposal in the courtyard of Bauer Wurster Hall. The work will be exhibited publicly and published in the 12th issue of Room One Thousand.
Any current CED Student who has successfully completed shop orientation may submit. You may submit as a team if at least 1 team member has successfully completed shop orientation.
The structure, installation or object should be able to be installed in one day on the grass area of the courtyard at Bauer Wurster Hall. The space has one power outlet. The installation will take place during early March; therefore, please consider a rain contingency plan.
The materials cost should not exceed the $1000 budget. Acquisition and installation are the responsibility of the selected project team with support from the CED shops .
Submissions should consist of drawings of the proposed installation depicting the system as a whole and in its aggregate state with an accompanying conceptual narrative. Technical drawings are encouraged. Submit via Google form below:
The Room One Thousand Editorial Team will be responsible for judging the submissions. The jury will consider the following selection criteria: pertinence to the theme, project feasibility and constructability, and design impact. Following the jury’s selection of the winning project, the College of Environmental Design will conduct a safety assessment of the project that may entail revisions.
